Waste Wise Denver (2006 – 2012)

“Waste Wise Denver” was an annual newsletter mailed to all homes served by Denver Solid Waste Management before the start of each new year. As the project coordinator for seven issues from 2006 to 2012, I was responsible for various tasks such as designing a newsletter theme, writing articles, setting publication deadlines, compiling articles from other staff members, creating service calendars, collaborating with the graphic artist on the layout, managing edits, reviewing and approving printer’s proofs, and compiling a mailing list of 170,000 homes that were to receive the newsletter.

2011 Waste Wise Denver I was particularly proud of my work in the production of this issue. I wrote the bulk of the articles and developed the theme “Do This, Not That”, which focused on proper set-out rules for residents. This theme provided a unique look from previous issues. Additionally, I staged and photographed all the proper and improper set-out images, along with all the instructional text.I am also proud of the design of the title “Waste Wise Denver”, which featured hot air balloon background images on the top of the cover page. This was a deviation from the fixed title design used in previous issues and spurred the use of future eye-catching titles. Furthermore, this issue was the first time a “magazine” style print layout was used, allowing for easier reading and additional content pages.

The Denver Com-Post News (2014 – 2017)

From 2014 to 2017, I produced a bi-annual newsletter called “The Denver Com-Post News”. This newsletter was distributed to participants of the Denver Composts program, which includes around 10,000 to 16,000 homes. The purpose of the newsletter was to provide program updates and inspire residents to continue using the compost program.

The Denver Com-Post News, August 2017 My intention for this issue was to respond to the common compost service collection inquiries received from residents over the previous several months and remind program participants of the items accepted for composting. I wrote all the articles contained in this issue and selected all the images used. Feedback from residents on this issue was that the information was pertinent and encouraged them to enhance their composting efforts.

Recycling Signup Postcards (2009)

I was responsible for developing postcards as part of an outreach campaign aimed at increasing recycling participation in areas of Denver where Spanish is predominantly spoken and read. I conducted research on marketing efforts that were found to be effective in Spanish-speaking communities, such as family, children, and baseball themes. Though it was challenging to track new recycling sign-ups directly to the postcards, the targeted areas showed an increase in recycling participation in the months following the postcards’ distribution.

Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Programs, Ads and Newsletters

2014 International SWANA Road-E-O Event Program I was responsible for overseeing the production of an event program for attendees of the 2014 SWANA International Road-E-O, which took place in Denver. To make the program more appealing to attendees, I chose the slogan “Soaring to New Heights” and collaborated closely with a third-party graphic designer to create an attractive cover image. Using the cover image and color scheme, I developed a template for the other pages of the event program, which I used to design other content in Microsoft Publisher. I wrote and formatted all of the printed text and images, ensuring that the program was visually appealing and easy to read.

2018 SWANApalooza Program Ad This ad was placed in solid waste publications to promote the host chapter reception for the 2018 SWANApalooza solid waste conference event held in Denver. For this reception, I came up with an “Oktoberfest” theme and wrote all the promotional copy. The reception turned out to be a huge success, with one of the highest attendance rates for host chapter receptions in recent SWANApalooza conferences. I produced the content, and the design work was completed by a third-party graphic designer.

2012 Summer issue of the Colorado SWANA Quarterly Chapter News As President and Communications Chair of the Colorado SWANA Chapter, I developed a consistent newsletter format for outreach. This newsletter was distributed via email and posted on the Chapter’s website.

Gainesville Business Recycling News (1992 – 2002)

Business Recycling News, 2002 This newsletter aimed to promote commercial recycling in Gainesville. As the writer and editor, I used the success story of a local business to illustrate waste reduction strategies that readers could apply at their workplace. Group 5 Advertising was responsible for the design work, producing a supplemental insert that was included in the Gainesville Sun for all addresses within the city limits that received the newspaper.
